Background of the Meeting
for Peace, Solidarity,
and African Reconstruction
The journey of the African
Caravan for Peace and Solidarity, which began one year ago,
is ending in Dar es Salaam (Tanzania) with the African Continental
Meeting. The meeting will be attended, between June 21 and
June 26, by about 80 participants from all the sub-regions
of Africa.
Tanzania is playing a key
role in the peace process of the Great Lakes Region. It
hosts the International Penal Tribunal for Rwanda and is
central in mediating the peace negotiations.
Started in Cape Town (South
Africa) on the anniversary of the South African Freedom
Charter, the Caravan thus remains true to its calling.
The Meeting is organized jointly
by the Martin Luther King International Centre (Burundi)
and the Global PanAfrican Movement (formerly Nyerere Foundation
- Tanzania). A youth group from UVIKIUTA (Young Christians
Organisation for Development) is taking an active part in
welcoming the participants, in the cultural activities,
and in the workshops.
The work is organized around
3 themes: Governance; Economy; and Values and Culture. Workshops
will for instance be held on "Decentralization and
Regional Integration" and "The Future of African
Business Networks".
