Gathered at Dakar (Senegal) in November 2000, the members of the organizing team of the continental meetings of June 2001 have proposed to organize in each meeting a Drums for peace initiative, and encourage all allies to do the same in their own towns and villages.
"We've been hearing war drums for too long now. We're fed up of killer heroes. We no longer understand the desire to resolve differences by slaughtering. We're sick of empty, false speeches … they're killing people to save their own interests. We're sick of always hearing the same people. We want to hear other sounds. We want to hear other voices. We want to hear new ideas, new proposals.
We're getting together to be heard. Women and men, young and old from all over the world. The groans, the crying, the hunger, the forgotten... The new ideas, the proposals, the action. To make ourselves heard, anywhere, with a single sound, but a diverse one, with kettle drums and bass drums, pots and pans...
Drums of Peace: drums that summon to the fight for peace.
The 21st of June 2001, for one day, hundreds of groups from all over the world will go out into the streets and squares... to sound our "Drums of Peace". Different sounds, different instruments, different struggles, together, thundering for peace!
An alliance for peace, for a responsible, plural and united world is getting going.
Do you want to make your voice heard? Four simultaneous gatherings, of Europeans in Rumania, Africans in Tanzania, Americans in Ecuador, Asians in India... Men and women from every continent will make their proposals heard, on the 21st of June 2001. Do you want to take part? With your group, your friends, your family...
